Overview
Kurzgesagt, "in a nutshell", is a Munich animation studio founded by Philipp Dettmer in 2013. Its videos, narrated over flat-colour animation populated by birds, explain one subject each: the immune system, nuclear power, the Fermi paradox, black holes, addiction, the scale of the universe, existential risk. Every video is published with a sources document, and the studio has retracted and remade videos it decided were wrong, with a video explaining why. It is funded by merchandise, Patreon, and grants from foundations, which it discloses.
Notes
On the list for the self-correction as much as the explanations. A channel that pulls a popular video because the research under it did not hold up, and says so on camera, is practising the fallibilism I preach; most institutions with a hundredth of the audience would not. The explanations are good first passes rather than last words, and the optimism is a house style rather than a finding, but the Nuclear Power episodes are the clearest short statement of the case I make there. The foundation funding has drawn criticism; the disclosure answers most of it.
