Robert Axelrod

Notes

Robert Axelrod (born 1943), American political scientist. The Evolution of Cooperation (1984) reported the results of computer tournaments in which strategies for the iterated prisoner's dilemma competed against one another. The winner, Tit for Tat, was nice (never defects first), retaliatory, forgiving, and clear. These four properties map onto most folk moral rules, which is why the book matters to my account of morality as an emergent product of self-interest.
