Adam Smith
Notes
Adam Smith (1723–1790), Scottish moral philosopher and the founder of modern economics. The Wealth of Nations (1776) described how self-interested exchange, coordinated by prices, produces outcomes no one intended; The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759), which he thought the better book, grounded morality in sympathy, which is close to my own view (see Morality and Empathy). Held a version of the labour theory of value that Karl Marx later developed; was also puzzled by the diamond–water paradox that the marginalists solved. A friend of David Hume.
