Arthur Conan Doyle
Notes
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930), Scottish physician and author, creator of Sherlock Holmes, whose method of reasoning from evidence to conclusion is the popular model of inference (though Holmes's "deduction" is mostly abduction). Also, late in life, a credulous spiritualist who defended the Cottingley fairy photographs and fell out with Houdini over séances, which is a useful reminder that inventing a great sceptic is no protection against being a poor one.
