Benjamin Franklin (1706–1790), printer, scientist, diplomat, and one of the founders of the United States. The line "those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety" comes from a 1755 letter on behalf of the Pennsylvania Assembly and was about taxation, not surveillance, but it has earned its wider use. A deist who found most of organised religion unnecessary.
