John Calvin

Notes

John Calvin (1509–1564) was the French theologian whose Institutes of the Christian Religion (1536; final edition 1559) systematised Reformed Protestantism and who governed Geneva as a theocracy, in which Michael Servetus was burned for heresy in 1553. The Institutes open with the claim that every human mind carries an innate awareness of God, the sensus divinitatis, which Alvin Plantinga made the basis of the Reformed Epistemology Argument. He appears here for that doctrine, and for its corollary, that unbelief is the suppression of what everyone knows.
