John Hick
Notes
John Hick (1922–2012), British philosopher of religion, author of Evil and the God of Love (1966), which revived the Irenaean "soul-making" theodicy: suffering exists because a world without it could not produce moral and spiritual growth. He later became the leading advocate of religious pluralism, the view that the major religions are different human responses to one ultimate reality, and was tried for heresy by the Presbyterian church in the United States for doubting the virgin birth. He appears here as the best version of a theodicy I think fails.
