Lafayette Ronald Hubbard (1911–1986), American pulp science-fiction writer, author of Dianetics (1950) and founder of the Church of Scientology (1953). He spent his last decades in hiding from lawsuits and subpoenas, latterly on a ranch in California, while his organisation ran the largest private infiltration of the United States government on record. His biography, as reconstructed from his own naval and medical records, bears little resemblance to the one his church publishes, which is the point of including him.
