Svante Arrhenius
Notes
Svante Arrhenius (1859–1927), Swedish physical chemist, Nobel laureate 1903. In 1896 he calculated, by hand, how much the Earth's surface temperature would rise if atmospheric carbon dioxide doubled, and arrived at a figure within the range of modern estimates. The physics of climate change has therefore been understood for well over a century; what has changed is the carbon dioxide.
