Edzard Ernst
Notes
Edzard Ernst (born 1948), German-born physician who held the world's first chair in complementary medicine, at Exeter from 1993 to 2011, and used it to run the trials and systematic reviews that the field had avoided. He began as a practitioner of homeopathy and ended as its most thorough critic, which is the right order. Co-author with Simon Singh of Trick or Treatment? (2008), and the source for most of the evidence in my notes on Acupuncture, Chiropractic and Naturopathy. His chair was closed after a public dispute with the then Prince of Wales over a report promoting alternative medicine on the NHS.
