William Rowe

Notes

William L. Rowe (1931–2015), American philosopher of religion at Purdue. His 1979 paper "The Problem of Evil and Some Varieties of Atheism" set out the evidential problem of evil in its modern form, with the example of a fawn dying slowly in a forest fire: suffering that serves no purpose any being could have, and that an omnipotent, omnibenevolent god would have prevented. Rowe called himself a "friendly atheist", holding that a theist could be rational while still being wrong, which is a courtesy not always returned.
