Overview
CGP Grey has made animated explainers since 2010, narrated over stick figures and maps, on subjects that are usually confused: the difference between the United Kingdom, Great Britain, and England; how voting systems work and fail; the Electoral College; how the royal family is funded; the Holy Roman Empire; the logic of power in Rules for Rulers, drawn from The Dictator's Handbook; and whether automation will leave anything for people to do. He also co-hosts the podcasts Hello Internet and Cortex.
Notes
The voting-system videos are the best five-minute arguments against first-past-the-post in existence, and Rules for Rulers is the most useful short model of political power I know, because it explains why rulers behave as they do without needing them to be wicked. His account of how the monarchy is paid for is the background to my position on the UK Monarchy. The videos are occasionally more confident than the evidence, and he says so in the follow-ups.
