Linus Pauling
Notes
Linus Pauling (1901–1994), American chemist, winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (1954) for his work on the chemical bond and the Nobel Peace Prize (1962) for campaigning against nuclear testing, and the only person to hold two unshared Nobels. From the late 1960s he promoted megadoses of vitamin C, which he took by the spoonful, as a preventive and cure for colds, influenza and cancer; the trials he inspired found no such effect. He appears here as the clearest case of the "Nobel disease", in which great authority in one field is spent on nonsense in another, and as the reason there is a vitamin C aisle (Dietary Supplements, Appeal to Authority).
