Augustine of Hippo
Notes
Augustine (354–430), bishop of Hippo in Roman North Africa, is the most influential theologian of Western Christianity. The Confessions (c. 400) is the archetype of the conversion narrative (Argument from Religious Transformation); On Free Choice of the Will contains the first form of the argument from eternal truths; and he gave the Church the doctrine of original sin and the defence of evil as mere privation of good (Theodicy). He appears here for all three, and as the man who prayed "give me chastity, but not yet".
