Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. (1841–1935), US Supreme Court justice. His dissents built the modern American law of free speech, including the "marketplace of ideas" and the "clear and present danger" test, though he also wrote the "shouting fire in a theatre" line that has been misused ever since.
