Jean-Paul Sartre

Notes

Jean-Paul Sartre (1905–1980), French philosopher, novelist and playwright, the central figure of atheist Existentialism. Being and Nothingness (1943) and the lecture Existentialism Is a Humanism (1946) set out the view that existence precedes essence, that humans are "condemned to be free", and that pretending otherwise is bad faith. He declined the Nobel Prize in 1964.

He appears here for the existentialist account of Meaning and for bad faith, which survives the loss of metaphysical free will better than the rest of his system does.
