Muhammad (c. 570–632), merchant of Mecca, who from about 610 reported revelations that became the Qur'an, founded the first Muslim community at Medina in 622, and had united most of Arabia under it by his death. His existence is not seriously doubted; the detailed biography comes from sources compiled a century and more later, through the same kind of transmission that I decline to trust for Jesus. He appears here as the founder whose claims are assessed under Islam.
