John Philoponus

Notes

John Philoponus (c. 490–570), Christian philosopher of Alexandria. Argued against Aristotle's eternal universe that an actual infinite number of past events is impossible, and so the universe must have begun. This is the earliest known form of the argument that became the Kalam Cosmological Argument, passed through Islamic philosophy and back into Christian apologetics a millennium and a half later. He also anticipated the rejection of Aristotle's physics of motion, which bears on the Prime Mover Argument.
