Max Tegmark
Notes
Max Tegmark (born 1967), Swedish-American physicist at MIT, cosmologist and co-founder of the Future of Life Institute. Appears here for his 2000 calculation that quantum coherence in the brain decoheres on timescales around ten trillion times shorter than neural signalling, which is the standard reply to Roger Penrose's quantum theory of consciousness. His later book Life 3.0 (2017) argues, as I do under Substrate Independence, that intelligence and consciousness are patterns of information processing rather than properties of a material.
