Overview
A long-form 2025 interview with Brian Cox on what quantum mechanics says about the nature of reality: superposition, entanglement, the measurement problem, why the quantum world is not "weird" so much as unfamiliar, and what it means that the everyday world of tables and chairs is built from it. Cox's gift is to explain without either dumbing down or hiding behind the mathematics, and this is him at length rather than in a soundbite.
Notes
- Just awesome.
- It is a useful corrective to the quantum mysticism of Deepak Chopra and the New Age aisle. Cox is explicit that nothing in quantum mechanics has anything to do with consciousness, intention or healing; the "observer" in the measurement problem is any interaction, not a mind. Anyone who tells you quantum physics supports their spirituality has read the word "observer" and stopped.
- Relevant to Physicalism and Emergence: the classical world emerges from the quantum one without anything extra being added, which is the pattern I expect Consciousness to follow.
