Raul Hilberg (1926–2007), Austrian-born American political scientist and the founding scholar of Holocaust studies. The Destruction of the European Jews (1961; third edition 2003) reconstructed the machinery of the genocide from the perpetrators' own documents, and his demographic work is the basis of the figure of around 5.1 million Jewish victims, at the lower end of the scholarly range.
