Siddhartha Gautama
Notes
Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha (c. fifth century BC), a teacher in the Ganges basin whose analysis of suffering and its cure became Buddhism. The dates, the biography and the sayings are all uncertain; the earliest written texts are centuries later, and the canonical life story includes a miraculous birth and conception. He appears here because his psychological observations hold up better than his cosmology, and because the Western picture of him as a secular philosopher is a modern edit.
