Thomas Piketty (born 1971), French economist at the Paris School of Economics. Capital in the Twenty-First Century (2013) assembled two centuries of data on wealth and income and argued that when the return on capital exceeds the rate of economic growth, as it has for most of history, wealth concentrates and inherited advantage compounds. This is the formal statement of the mechanism in Wealth and Luck. His data have held up better than his proposed remedy, a global wealth tax.
