Simon Singh

Notes

Simon Singh (born 1964), British science writer with a doctorate in particle physics, author of Fermat's Last Theorem, The Code Book and Big Bang, and co-author with Edzard Ernst of Trick or Treatment? (2008). In 2008 the British Chiropractic Association sued him for libel over a Guardian column calling its childhood-treatment claims "bogus"; he won in the Court of Appeal in 2010, and the case led to the reform of English libel law in the Defamation Act 2013. He later founded the Good Thinking Society, which campaigns against pseudoscience in public health. He appears here for the chiropractic case, which is the best recent example of free speech doing the work that a regulator had not.
