Fred Hoyle

Notes

Sir Fred Hoyle (1915–2001), English astronomer who worked out how the heavier elements are made inside stars, coined the term "Big Bang" (as a sneer; he preferred his own steady-state model), and later argued that life was seeded from space. His image of a tornado sweeping through a junkyard and assembling a Boeing 747 was meant as an argument against the chance origin of life and has been borrowed by creationists ever since as an argument against evolution, which it does not address, since natural selection is not chance. See Evolution by natural selection.
