Overview
An episode of Piers Morgan Uncensored from May 2025, billed as a "science showdown", in which Eric Weinstein and Sean Carroll argued about the state of theoretical physics. Weinstein's case was that fundamental physics has been captive to string theory for forty years, that the institutions are corrupt and the ethics have collapsed, and that his own Geometric Unity has been shut out. Carroll's case was that this is a wildly misleading history, that physics is doing fine on the many fronts that are not string theory, and that Geometric Unity is not a serious paper, a judgement Weinstein's own paper partly concedes by describing itself as reconstructed from old notes. Piers Morgan interrupted both.
Notes
- The disagreement is not really about physics. It is about whether the failure of one person's theory to be taken up is evidence of a broken system or evidence about the theory. Weinstein's position requires the first and offers no way to tell it from the second; that is the shape of every "they are suppressing me" claim, from flat Earth upwards, and it is why the Burden of proof sits with the person making it.
- Carroll's refusal to pretend the paper is something it is not was the right call and cost him with the audience, which is the general lesson about this format. A patient explanation loses to a grievance on television. See Steelmanning for what the exchange should have looked like.
- Sabine Hossenfelder, who agrees with a good deal of Weinstein's critique of the field's incentives and none of his conclusion about himself, is the useful third voice here.
