Jean-Jacques Rousseau
Notes
Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712–1778), Genevan philosopher of the social contract and the "general will". Held that people are naturally good and corrupted by society, which is a nice thought with little evidence behind it. Influential on the French Revolution, Romanticism and, less happily, on every theory that the state embodies the real will of the people.
