Thomas Paine
Notes
Thomas Paine (1737–1809), English-born pamphleteer of the American and French revolutions, author of Common Sense (1776), Rights of Man (1791) and The Age of Reason (1794–1807). The last is the classic statement of deism: a creator revealed in nature, and revelation, miracles, priests and the Bible rejected as fraud. It cost him most of his friends and his reputation in America, where he was buried by six people. He appears here as the honest terminus of the design argument before Darwin.
