Ayoade on Ayoade

  • Richard Ayoade (2014)

Overview

Ayoade on Ayoade: A Cinematic Odyssey is a parody of the celebrity-interview book, in which Ayoade interviews himself at length about his two films and his philosophy of cinema, and finds himself a difficult, pompous, and evasive subject. The joke is sustained through footnotes, appendices, a glossary, and an index, all of which are funnier than the main text, and the whole thing is a demolition of the genre of directors talking seriously about themselves.

Notes

On this list because it is one of the funniest books on this list, and because it is a lesson in a particular kind of humour: the self-important narrator who does not know he is the joke. Nothing in it bears on any position in this vault, except that the ability to hear pomposity in prose is a transferable skill.
