Arthur Schopenhauer
Notes
Arthur Schopenhauer (1788–1860), German philosopher of pessimism. Saw the world as blind striving "will", took suffering to be the default condition, and found relief in art, compassion and asceticism. Also one of the first Western philosophers to take Buddhist and Hindu thought seriously, and the source of "a man can do what he wills, but he cannot will what he wills".
