Elizabeth Anscombe

Notes

G. E. M. Anscombe (1919–2001) was a British analytic philosopher, a student and literary executor of Ludwig Wittgenstein, and a devout Catholic. Intention (1957) founded the modern philosophy of action, and "Modern Moral Philosophy" (1958) revived virtue ethics. She appears here for the Oxford Socratic Club meeting of February 1948 at which she showed that C. S. Lewis's Argument from Reason confused non-rational causes with irrational ones, after which Lewis rewrote the chapter. That a Catholic philosopher demolished the argument is a point in favour of the argument's critics and of the Catholic.
