Joseph Smith
Notes
Joseph Smith Jr (1805–1844), founder of the Latter Day Saint movement. A treasure-seer in upstate New York, tried in 1826 for using a stone to find buried money, he dictated the Book of Mormon in 1829 by the same method, founded a church in 1830, "translated" a set of Egyptian funerary papyri as the Book of Abraham in 1835, took some forty wives, and was shot by a mob in 1844 while jailed for ordering a critical newspaper destroyed. He is the best-documented founder of a major religion, which is why he appears here.
