Milo Yiannopoulos vs Destiny

Overview
A two-hour structured debate on Christian nationalism, hosted by Uncensored America at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in April 2023. Milo Yiannopoulos, by then a self-described ex-gay Catholic, argued that America should be governed as an explicitly Christian nation; Destiny argued the secular liberal case. Much of it stayed on topic; a good deal of it was personal.
Notes
- A trainwreck for Milo, who appeared to be on some kind of substance and tried to style his way through the evening while being badly short of both style and charisma. The persona that made him famous in 2016 depended on an audience that found him shocking; in front of a debate crowd that had come for arguments, there was nothing underneath it.
- Destiny's method is on display: let the opponent talk, ask what the words mean, and wait. Christian nationalism as Milo presented it never survived the question of which Christians, and what happens to the rest. See Hard Secularism and Religious Exemptions in Law.
- It is also an illustration of why I do not take the ex-gay narrative seriously as evidence of anything except what the narrator currently needs to be. See Argument from Religious Transformation.
