Voltaire
Notes
François-Marie Arouet (1694–1778), who wrote as Voltaire, French Enlightenment writer, satirist, and relentless critic of the Catholic Church and of religious intolerance. Candide (1759) is the funniest book ever written about the problem of evil. He did not say "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"; Evelyn Beatrice Hall wrote it in 1906 to summarise his attitude, and the attitude is accurate. See Free Speech.
