Galileo Galilei
Notes
Galileo Galilei (1564–1642), Italian astronomer and physicist, the first to turn a telescope on the sky and the founder of the experimental method in physics. Tried by the Roman Inquisition in 1633 for defending the Copernican model, forced to recant, and kept under house arrest for the rest of his life. The Church formally admitted its error in 1992 (Catholic Church Apologies), 350 years late, which is the standard example of what happens when religious authority is given a say over empirical questions (Hard Secularism).
