COVID-19 Origin
My Positions
- SARS-CoV-2 is a novel coronavirus that emerged in Wuhan, China, in late 2019 and caused a global pandemic.
- There is no evidence that the virus was engineered. Its genome shows the hallmarks of natural evolution and none of the markers that engineering would leave.
- The question of whether the virus reached humans through a natural spillover (most likely at the Huanan seafood market) or through an accidental release of a naturally occurring virus from a laboratory remains unresolved. The balance of published evidence favours natural spillover, but an accidental laboratory origin cannot be excluded, chiefly because the Chinese government has obstructed investigation. The two questions, "was it engineered?" and "did it escape from a lab?", are distinct, and conflating them is a common error on both sides.
- The virus was not a deliberate release, a bioweapon, or a planned event.
Rejected Positions
Deliberate bioweapon release
- Claim: COVID-19 was engineered as a bioweapon and released intentionally.
- Basis: The timing; the proximity of the Wuhan Institute of Virology; general distrust of China.
- Reason for rejection: Genomic analysis shows the virus evolved naturally; it lacks the signatures of any known engineering technique and its receptor-binding domain is sub-optimal in ways no designer would have chosen (Andersen et al., 2020). A bioweapon that kills mainly the elderly, spreads uncontrollably, and devastates the economy of the country that released it would be a poor weapon. The claim also fails Hanlon's Razor.
Planned pandemic ("Plandemic")
- Claim: COVID-19 was planned by governments, Bill Gates, the WHO, or the World Economic Forum to control populations, impose vaccines, or enact a "Great Reset".
- Basis: Event 201 (a pandemic preparedness exercise held in October 2019), the speed of the vaccine response, and the imposition of lockdowns.
- Reason for rejection: Event 201 was a public tabletop exercise, one of many run over the preceding two decades precisely because a coronavirus pandemic was considered likely. Preparing for a predictable event is not evidence of causing it. The response of governments was chaotic, contradictory, and frequently incompetent, which is not what a plan looks like. See Chesterton's Fence in reverse: the people who believe governments are capable of orchestrating a global pandemic in secret are often the same people who believe governments cannot competently run a post office.
The virus does not exist / COVID is just the flu
- Claim: The virus has never been isolated; the deaths were misattributed.
- Basis: Misunderstanding of virological methods; distrust of mortality statistics.
- Reason for rejection: SARS-CoV-2 has been isolated, cultured, sequenced, and imaged thousands of times in laboratories across the world. Excess mortality statistics, which do not depend on cause-of-death attribution, show around 15 to 20 million more deaths than expected worldwide in 2020–21. It was not the flu.
