Albert Camus

Notes

Albert Camus (1913–1960), French-Algerian novelist and essayist, author of The Stranger, The Plague and The Myth of Sisyphus (1942), in which he argues that the confrontation between the human demand for meaning and a universe that offers none is "the absurd", and that the honest response is neither suicide nor religion but revolt: to live fully in the knowledge that nothing is guaranteed. He rejected the existentialist label and fell out with Jean-Paul Sartre over politics. Nobel Prize in Literature, 1957.

He appears here under Existentialism and Meaning: the absurd is a real observation and, I think, only a problem if you expected otherwise.
