Alfred Russel Wallace

Notes

Alfred Russel Wallace (1823–1913), Welsh naturalist who arrived at the theory of natural selection independently of Charles Darwin while collecting in the Malay Archipelago. His 1858 letter to Darwin prompted the joint presentation to the Linnean Society and the writing of the Origin. Also the founder of biogeography. He later embraced spiritualism and argued that the human mind could not be the product of selection alone, which is a reminder that the discoverer of a mechanism is not its owner.
