John Rawls (1921–2002), American political philosopher, author of A Theory of Justice. Asked what rules you would choose from behind a veil of ignorance, not knowing your place in society, and concluded that inequalities are justified only when they benefit the worst off. Still the baseline that political philosophy argues with.
