Overview
Drew McCoy grew up evangelical in Texas, left, and has spent the years since making calm, scripted videos about what he left: the standard apologetic arguments, the experience of deconversion, religious trauma, purity culture, Christian nationalism, and the sociology of why belief persists. The channel also carries interviews with scholars, former clergy, and other ex-believers. The tone is unusually measured for the genre, and he is as interested in why religion works for people as in why its claims fail.
Notes
He sits on my "might be based" list, for which see People who be and be not based, but the channel goes on the recommended list on its merits. McCoy is the best of the ex-evangelical commentators on the social side of belief, the side I address under The human need for religion and Religious Experience, and he never mistakes the believer for the belief. A good first channel for someone who is leaving and does not yet want to be shouted at.
