Miguel de Cervantes
Notes
Miguel de Cervantes (1547–1616), Spanish novelist, soldier and tax collector. Lost the use of his left hand at the battle of Lepanto, spent five years as a captive in Algiers and some time in prison for irregularities in his accounts, and wrote Don Quixote in his late fifties when nothing else had worked. It is usually called the first modern novel and is on this list as the best portrait ever written of a mind that has made its beliefs unfalsifiable.
