5G Towers

My Positions

  1. 5G is a fifth-generation mobile network standard that uses higher-frequency radio waves than its predecessors. There is no evidence that these radio waves cause harm, including cancer, COVID-19, or any other illness, at the exposure levels permitted by regulation.
  2. The 5G health panic is a reprise of identical panics about 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi, mobile phones, power lines, and microwave ovens, none of which was borne out.

Rejected Positions

5G causes health problems

  • Claim: 5G radiation causes cancer, COVID-19, or other illnesses.
  • Basis: Generalised fear of "radiation", misinformation, and the coincidental timing of the 5G rollout with the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Reason for rejection: 5G uses non-ionising radiation. Its photons do not carry enough energy to break chemical bonds or damage DNA, which is the mechanism by which ionising radiation (X-rays, gamma rays) causes cancer. Visible light is higher in frequency than any 5G band and is not carcinogenic. Public exposure limits set by ICNIRP are many times below the level at which any heating effect occurs. No plausible mechanism and no epidemiological evidence of harm has been found.

5G spreads or causes COVID-19

  • Claim: 5G weakens the immune system, or the virus is transmitted by radio waves.
  • Basis: Timing of the Wuhan 5G rollout; a misunderstanding of what a virus is.
  • Reason for rejection: Viruses are physical particles and cannot travel on radio waves. COVID-19 spread widely in countries and regions with no 5G infrastructure at all (for example Iran). The claim led to arson attacks on phone masts in the UK in 2020, including masts that were not 5G and masts serving hospitals.

5G is a surveillance or mind-control tool

  • Claim: The network is a covert weapon or monitoring system.
  • Basis: General distrust of government and technology companies.
  • Reason for rejection: 5G is a radio communications standard with publicly documented specifications. Mobile networks of every generation can be used to locate handsets, which is a legitimate privacy concern, but that is a feature of mobile telephony, not of 5G, and has nothing to do with the radio frequency.
