John Henry Newman
Notes
John Henry Newman (1801–1890) was an Anglican priest and leader of the Oxford Movement who converted to Catholicism in 1845, became a cardinal, and was canonised in 2019. An Essay in Aid of a Grammar of Assent (1870) is his account of how belief is reasonably held without proof, and its fifth chapter is the classic statement of the Argument from Conscience: that the sense of being judged implies a judge. He appears here for that argument, which he admitted would persuade only those who already felt the presence it describes.
