Sigmund Freud (1856–1939), Austrian founder of psychoanalysis. Most of his specific theories have not survived as science, but the general idea that much of the mind is hidden from itself has. The Future of an Illusion treats religion as wish-fulfilment, which is at least a hypothesis.
