Personal Incredulity

Type

Informal

AKA

Argument from Incredulity, Unbelievability Fallacy

Description

Claiming something must be false because one finds it difficult to understand or believe.

Examples

  • "I can't believe humans evolved from apes. It just sounds wrong."
  • "Quantum physics can't be real—it’s too weird."
  • "The Egyptians could never have built the pyramids." (See Ancient Aliens.)

Notes

  • The limit of my imagination is a fact about me, not about the world. This is the point of Owens Tryptic of Ignorance: I cannot understand an infinite past, a finite one, or any third option, and that incomprehension is evidence of nothing.
  • Most of the apologetic arguments contain a step of this form: the argument from design cannot imagine complexity without a designer, the Kalam cannot imagine an actual infinite, and the hard problem cannot imagine experience arising from matter.
