9-11 Terrorist attacks

My Positions

  1. The 9/11 terrorist attacks, which occurred on September 11, 2001, consisted of four coordinated attacks by nineteen al-Qaeda terrorists against the United States.
  2. Fifteen of the nineteen hijackers were from Saudi Arabia. Two were from the United Arab Emirates, one from Lebanon, and one from Egypt.
  3. The two towers of the World Trade Center in New York City collapsed as a direct result of two aircraft (American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175) being deliberately flown into them, and the fires that followed.
  4. A third aircraft (American Airlines Flight 77) was crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia.
  5. A fourth aircraft (United Airlines Flight 93), which was headed towards Washington, D.C., crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew fought back against the hijackers.
  6. 2,977 people were killed, excluding the hijackers.
  7. The attacks were planned by al-Qaeda under Osama bin Laden and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. Bin Laden acknowledged responsibility in a video released in October 2004.
  8. The attacks were religiously motivated. The hijackers believed they were performing an act of worship for which they would be rewarded after death. See Atheism for the effect this had on my own views, and Life After Death.

Rejected Positions

I reject the following commonly held positions:

Controlled demolition

  • Claim: The Twin Towers and WTC 7 were brought down by pre-planted explosives or thermite, not by aircraft impact and fire.
  • Basis: Apparently symmetrical collapse, speed of fall, reports of molten metal, and eyewitness accounts of "explosions".
  • Reason for rejection: The collapse mechanisms were consistent with structural damage from impact and prolonged, unfought fires weakening steel. No physical evidence of explosives or thermite was found. Controlled demolition requires weeks of preparatory work (stripping walls, cutting columns, laying charges) in occupied buildings, which no one noticed. The "explosions" reported are consistent with the sounds of a collapsing building. The towers did not fall at free-fall speed. See the Composition Fallacy: that explosives can bring down a building does not mean every falling building was brought down by explosives.

Inside job / government complicity

  • Claim: The U.S. government orchestrated or deliberately allowed the attacks to justify war and expand its powers.
  • Basis: The Project for the New American Century's reference to a "new Pearl Harbor", NORAD's inaction, and alleged suspicious financial activity.
  • Reason for rejection: No credible evidence supports government involvement. The failures were due to systemic problems (poor inter-agency communication, a NORAD posture designed for external threats) which the 9/11 Commission documented in detail. A conspiracy of the scale required would have involved thousands of people and has produced no leak in over two decades. Hanlon's Razor applies: incompetence is sufficient.

WTC 7 collapse

  • Claim: Building 7 was destroyed by controlled demolition.
  • Basis: Sudden, apparently symmetrical collapse; the building was not hit by an aircraft.
  • Reason for rejection: WTC 7 was struck by debris from the North Tower and burned unfought for seven hours. NIST concluded that thermal expansion of floor beams caused the failure of a critical column (column 79), leading to progressive collapse. No explosives were found, and the building's collapse was not instantaneous or symmetrical; the east penthouse fell several seconds before the rest.

Pentagon attack

  • Claim: The Pentagon was hit by a missile or explosives, not Flight 77.
  • Basis: Apparently small impact hole; limited visible aircraft debris in early photographs.
  • Reason for rejection: Over a hundred eyewitnesses saw the aircraft. Aircraft debris, passenger remains, and both flight recorders were recovered. The flight path was confirmed by radar. The passengers of Flight 77 are dead, and the theory never explains where they went.

Flight 93 shoot-down

  • Claim: Flight 93 was shot down by the military and the scene staged.
  • Basis: Debris scattered over a wide area; early military confusion.
  • Reason for rejection: The cockpit voice recorder shows the passengers revolted and the hijackers crashed the aircraft deliberately. The debris field is consistent with a high-speed impact. No fighter was within range at the time.

Foreknowledge and financial gain

  • Claim: Unusual trading in airline stocks shows that insiders had foreknowledge.
  • Basis: A surge in put options on United and American Airlines stock in the days before 9/11.
  • Reason for rejection: The SEC and the 9/11 Commission investigated and traced the trades to institutional investors with no connection to al-Qaeda, including one US investment newsletter that had recommended the trades. (See the 9/11 Commission Report, chapter 5, note 130.)

Israeli / Mossad involvement

  • Claim: Israeli agents orchestrated or knew of the attacks; "4,000 Jews stayed home".
  • Basis: The arrest of five Israeli nationals in New Jersey; anti-Semitic tropes.
  • Reason for rejection: No evidence supports the claim. The "4,000 Jews" story was fabricated by a Lebanese television station and the figure (originally a count of Israeli nationals thought to be in the area) was never connected to the attacks. Hundreds of Jewish people were among the victims. The claim is a recycled blood libel and is considered racist.

Hijackers still alive

  • Claim: Some of the named hijackers were later reported alive.
  • Basis: Early misidentifications by the media of people with the same or similar names.
  • Reason for rejection: The identities were clarified within weeks. The hijackers were confirmed by passport, visa, immigration, flight school, and other records, and in several cases by their own families.

Stand-down order

  • Claim: U.S. air defences were ordered not to intercept the hijacked aircraft.
  • Basis: Delays and confusion at NORAD and the FAA.
  • Reason for rejection: NORAD was not equipped or postured for real-time response to domestic hijackings; its interceptors were oriented outward. Only fourteen fighters were on alert for the entire continental United States. The failures were due to lack of preparedness and poor communication, not conspiracy.
