Anti-Vaccine

My Positions

  1. Vaccines are rigorously tested for safety and efficacy, and have eradicated or suppressed many deadly diseases. Smallpox is gone. Polio is nearly gone. Measles, diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough, which killed children in their millions within living memory, are now rare wherever vaccination rates are high.
  2. Adverse effects are real, rare, and monitored globally through systems such as the UK's Yellow Card scheme and the US VAERS. The existence of monitoring is evidence that the system works, not that vaccines are dangerous.
  3. There is no relationship between vaccines and autism.
  4. Vaccines are among the most powerful and cost-effective public health tools ever devised, second only to clean water.
  5. Vaccination is also a collective act. Herd immunity protects those who cannot be vaccinated (infants, the immunocompromised), and the decision to refuse vaccination imposes a cost on others.

Rejected Positions

Vaccines cause autism

  • Claim: The MMR vaccine causes autism.
  • Basis: A 1998 paper in The Lancet by Andrew Wakefield and colleagues, based on twelve children.
  • Reason for rejection: The study was fraudulent. Wakefield had manipulated the data, had undisclosed financial conflicts of interest (he was being paid by lawyers preparing a case against vaccine manufacturers), and had subjected children to invasive procedures without ethical approval. The Lancet retracted the paper in 2010 and Wakefield was struck off the UK medical register. Multiple large studies since, including a 2019 Danish cohort study of 657,461 children (Hviid et al.) and a 2014 meta-analysis covering over 1.2 million children (Taylor et al.), have found no link. The apparent association is a Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc error: the MMR is given at around the age when autism is typically first diagnosed.

Vaccines contain dangerous toxins

  • Claim: Vaccines include mercury, aluminium, formaldehyde, and other toxins.
  • Basis: A misunderstanding of ingredients and of dose.
  • Reason for rejection: The ingredients are present in safe, regulated amounts, and the dose makes the poison. Thimerosal (an ethylmercury preservative, not the methylmercury that accumulates in fish) was removed from childhood vaccines in the UK and US by the early 2000s as a precaution, and autism rates continued to rise. Aluminium salts are adjuvants that improve the immune response, and a child ingests more aluminium from breast milk or formula than from vaccines. The body produces more formaldehyde as a by-product of normal metabolism than is present in any vaccine.

Vaccines as population control

  • Claim: Vaccines are a tool for sterilisation or depopulation.
  • Basis: Misinterpretation of public health programmes, and the recycling of older conspiracy narratives.
  • Reason for rejection: No credible evidence. The claim is incoherent on its face: the populations with the highest vaccination rates are the ones with the lowest mortality and the longest life expectancy.

Natural immunity is better

  • Claim: It is healthier to acquire immunity through infection.
  • Basis: Appeal to Nature.
  • Reason for rejection: Natural immunity requires surviving the disease. Measles kills around one in a thousand of those infected and causes encephalitis in a similar number; before vaccination it killed over two million children a year worldwide. The vaccine confers immunity without the risk.

COVID-19 vaccines were rushed and are unsafe

  • Claim: The mRNA vaccines were developed too quickly to be trusted and are causing mass harm.
  • Basis: The speed of development; genuine but rare adverse events (myocarditis in young men, clotting with the AstraZeneca vaccine) amplified out of proportion.
  • Reason for rejection: The speed came from parallel rather than sequential trial phases, unprecedented funding, a decade of prior mRNA research, and a large pool of trial participants because the disease was everywhere. No phase was skipped. The rare adverse events were detected precisely because the monitoring systems worked, and the risk of the same events from COVID-19 infection itself is higher.
