Søren Kierkegaard
Notes
Søren Kierkegaard (1813–1855), Danish philosopher and theologian, usually counted as the first existentialist. Against G.W.F. Hegel's system he insisted on the individual, on choice, and on the anxiety that comes with it; against comfortable Christendom he argued that Christianity is an offence to reason that can only be embraced by a "leap" of Faith, and that this is its point rather than its weakness.
He appears here as the honest apologist: he conceded everything the sceptic asks for, that the evidence is insufficient and the claims absurd, and asked for belief anyway. I respect the candour and decline the leap.
