Jaegwon Kim
Notes
Jaegwon Kim (1934–2019), Korean-American philosopher at Brown, the most rigorous critic of non-reductive views of mind from inside physicalism. His causal exclusion argument holds that if a physical cause is sufficient for an effect, a distinct mental or emergent cause is either identical to it or redundant, which is the formal version of the objection I make to strong emergence. His "pairing problem" asks the substance dualist what could pair a particular non-spatial mind with a particular body, and gets no answer. He appears here because he did the hard work of showing that the middle positions collapse into one side or the other.
