Gilbert Ryle
Notes
Gilbert Ryle (1900–1976), Oxford philosopher. The Concept of Mind (1949) attacked Cartesian dualism as "the dogma of the ghost in the machine" and diagnosed it as a category mistake: treating the mind as a further thing alongside the body, as a visitor might ask to see the university after being shown all the colleges. His own positive view leaned towards behaviourism, which I do not share, but the diagnosis has worn well and the phrase has outlived the book.
